A very early clump forming bamboo which grows in part shade. It has dark green leaves pale on underside. Its new shoots are red and green. This bamboo is not subtropical, they can lose their leaves in cold winters or in drought but will recovery in spring. This genus is more suited in small gardens than the tree like Phyllostachys.
